Coldplay :: Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

After being M.I.A. for the past 2 weeks, I'm back. Sorry for the delay, but I do actually have a real job that requires honest to God attention and time put to it. Thankfully, that crap may be over for a bit, so I can get back to wasting huge amounts of time.
Well, the new Coldplay album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, is being released tomorrow, and I for one am looking forward to hearing what Chris Martin and his fellow snaggle-toothed countrymen are bringing to the table this time. In reality, I already have the album, and let me tell you, it's not too damn shabby.
So far, I've been hearing a lot of people complaining about how their new stuff is a different - a real departure from their normal sound. Ummm...what? You listen to one song and automatically draw that conclusion? No, fortunately for those of us that enjoy Coldplay, they stay pretty true to their sound, but they do explore some different directions with their material, which is a good thing. With their first single, Violet Hill, released online weeks ago, they explore a new topic, composing their first ever anti-war protest song and borrowing a rhythm from the Beatles (Violet Hill is a street near Abbey Road). With Viva la Vida, or "live the life", the band hit their stride in a big way, making another hit song that will stick with you for the rest of the day. It's on a freaking iPod commercial, so you know you'll be singing it going to work by tomorrow morning.
Soaring vocals, giant beats, even a few strings thrown in....this is definitely a step up for the guys. They have some very cool, haunting songs, such as Cemeteries of London and 42, which breaks into some very Radiohead-ish sounding material at the end. You can't help but nod your head to the songs Lost? and Lovers In Japan, with their fantastic chorus lines and thumping beats. Strawberry Swing has some melodies reminiscent of the Fab Four, and closer Death and All His Friends ties it all up with a song that continues to build upon itself, finishing in dramatic fashion. If you're one of the legions that has followed Coldplay from their early days as the new hot thing to stadium kings, you won't be disappointed with this release. Score one more for the boys across the pond.

The Schedule Has Arrived

That's right. The 2008 Austin City Limits Music Festival schedule was just released, which means you now have two things to do: 1. Look at the list, envy the list, get a ticket if you haven't already, and start working out to prepare for the 3 mile treks in between stages. And 2. Start bitching. Bitch about how they could possibly have the nerve to put two awesome bands like the Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley on two different stages at the same damn time. The Black Keys at the same time as Iron & Wine? Clear across a park? Really? Really. Fucking tools. I understand there's a lot of great bands playing, and they have to fit them in at some point, but seriously...next time, get my opinion before doing so. Allow me to construct that schedule, and the shit will be banging! A man can dream, right?

On a related note, I will be avoiding the dreaded "swamp crotch" this year by using mass amounts of baby powder. All donations will be gladly accepted.

The Coen Bros. Make Me Happy

Anyone who watches a Coen Bros. movie immediately recognizes their distinct style and flair for telling their twisted little stories. Their genius is unmatched in this regard. Take for example The Big Lebowski. It's a classic. It's stupendous. And if you don't agree, then you can lick my taint. That's how much I love this film. Well, looks like they're about to release their next feature, similar in fashion to Lebowski. It's called Burn After Reading, and the cast, along with the story, make this flick look like the next Coen Bros. classic. It's slated for a fall release sometime. Can't wait.

Sigur Rós :: Gobbledigook

Here's the brand new single off of the forthcoming Sigur Rós album, entitled Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust, which means something like "with a buzz in our ear we play endlessly"...or something like that. Crazy Icelandians. Anywho, it's pretty kickass. You can definitely hear some comparisons to Animal Collective. Can't wait for this release. Check it out.

This is the glory of the craft at it's finest. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll be amazed. It's just...that...bad. And by bad, I mean unequivocally awesome.

Tim & Eric Awesome Show

For those that may not have heard of the genius that is known as Tim & Eric Awesome Show - Great Job!, sit back, relax and prepare to be floored. This Adult Swim sketch show continues to amaze me with the bizarre, random and completely absurd shit these guys do. I still crack up every time I watch these, and I think it's high time I finally share some of the better sketches with you all.

Listening Station :: Santogold

For a little while now, I've been hearing a lot of talk about this new, up-and-coming phenom in the indie music circles - an artist who many have been comparing to M.I.A., the Pixies, Spank Rock and Diplo. Obviously, I had to check her out.
Hailing from Philadelphia, Santi White, otherwise known as Santogold, has been rising in the ranks of artists to watch. Once an A&R rep at Epic Records, she decided to leave the business to pursue her love of producing and recording. Working with a variety of artists and genres has obviously taken hold of Santi's sound. Now, I'm not normally too much into M.I.A.'s type of music, but there was something about this sound that hooked me right away. With influences ranging from punk and ska to funk and pop, one has a hard time NOT getting hooked on this sound. This album's range is all over the place. Every song has a distinct feel to it.
I am truly impressed with this gal, and can't wait to see her perform live. You can definitely expect to see this fantastic debut on my best of list at the end of the year.

Nike Knows Soccer, er Football

Nike just released this 2 minute spot for the upcoming UEFA 2008 European Championship, and let me tell you, it bloody well kicks some freaking arse! The theme is Take It To The Next Level, and it places the viewer in a very cool, very unique first-person point of view. You see what it's like to be out on the pitch in a game, playing against some of today's best players, including Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and of course, Ronaldinho. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the spot exudes all of the excitement and fervor that comes with the game. If you're not pumped up, head-butting strangers on the street, listening to shitty Eurotrash with a fucked up grill by the end of this spot, then you're a dirty Yank without a soul, and can rightly go piss off.
